Frosh/Soph

The Frosh/Soph Basketball league had a great turnout for the 2006 season.  In all 120 players signed up to compete in 15-17 regular season games and playoffs.   It’s not a secret to those who attended the games that Frosh/Soph basketball was great entertainment for parents, grandparents and friends.  The Bulls, coached by Brian Gabriel, went 17-0 in the regular season despite the great play of all the teams they faced.  Eight of the Bulls games were decided by 6 points or less.

But, their season took an abrupt turn in the playoffs. The #1 seeded Bulls were upset by the #5 Rockets, coached by Terry Boyle, in an exciting game that was close from start to finish.  The #2 seeded Pistons, coached by Dan Ventura, who were undefeated in their first eleven games, ran the table in the playoffs.  The Pistons beat the Rockets 41-27 to take home the coveted Frosh/Soph Championship trophy.  In the consolation game for third place the Bulls beat the #4 Kings, coached by Brian Graf, 60-41.

OYA sends out a big thank you to the 12 coaches who volunteered their time and expertise to help make the 2006 season such a great success.  The quality of play and high level of competitiveness are testaments to the coaches commitment to their teams and the league.  Thanks Again.

Tournament Game Summary:

First quarter started out close, with the score 9-8, Pacers favor.  Pacers then stretched the lead at half to 17-10 on Matt Carmody's three free throws with no time left at end of the half. As he has all year, Nick Mata hit a key three pointer in the 3rd quarter, stretching the Pacers lead to 28-14 (aided also by outstanding defense applied by the Pacers three guard line-up of Tommy Nicholson, Eric Kudla and Eddie Butkus).  T-wolves did not give up and cut the Pacer lead down to six points, with pressure applied by their two guards, Tim Gibson and Danny Gonzales.  But the Pacers kept their cool, hit key free throws in the final minutes and won the championship 32-24, ending the season with a 20-1 record.  Brett Huff was the Pacer's leading scorer with 11 points.  Tim Gibson had 13 points to lead the T-wolves.

Congratulations to the Blazers for a 1st place finish!

It was an exciting and well-played game. They beat the Cavs, who had a nice playoff run, in a hard fought game, pulling away at the end. Also, congratulations to the Celtics and Pistons for a 3rd and 4th place finish respectfully. Good job to all the teams and especially the coaches for a good season and playoffs. There were many close exciting games that could have gone either way. Hopefully the kids had fun and we were able to teach them something this year.
