(World Series Summary by Rich Callaghan)

The Mets won the Pony world series by a score of 3 – 2 over the Phillies. The contest was hard fought on both sides and went down to final inning where the Mets scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Mets highlights from the contest included outstanding pitching by Jamie Leone (Game MVP) who gave up only 2 runs over 4 innings, while striking out 8 batters. Defensively the Mets turned in some gems with a sparkling play at third by Richie Callaghan and a rock solid play in center by Brett Pedersen on a low line drive.

Offensively the Mets got on the board first when Mike Leone scored from 3rd on an errant throw. Joe Khalil, who walked to start the bottom of the seventh, scored the winning run after being moved to 2nd by an unbelievable bunt by Eddie Butkus, and then scored from second on a huge clutch double by Jimmie Chamales into the left field corner.

The Phillies were led by Brian Mayer who pitched 4 outstanding innings of near perfect ball. Christian George (Game MVP) provided most of the offensive firepower with a clutch triple to the fence in left to start the 4th, and Vince Maida also contributed with 2 hits, a triple and single during the game.

The final game was a true classic, of which OYA can be proud.
