Orland Youth Association Boys Basketball 2004-2005 Season Recap

OYA Boys JUNIOR/SENIOR Basketball

Commissioner: Mike Conrad

The 2005 Junior/Senior basketball league ended its wild ride with thrilling double overtime periods in both the championship and consolation games. Believe it or not, a margin of only 3 points separated the winners and losers, but in the end the Hornets came out on top in both the regular season and the final championship game.

The O.Y.A. would like to extend a special thanks to Mike Conrad for all of his hard work. Mike steps down after almost a decade of service as basketball commissioner.

In an amazing championship game the that was really decided with 1.8 seconds left on the clock the Nuggets defeated the Pistons 51-48. Both teams came out hustling and never quit until the final buzzer. This was just a great way to end the season.

In the consolation game the Hornets defeated the Bulls 51-46. Again, this was a hard fought game by both teams with the outcome really not decided until the last 15-30 seconds.

Overall, the 8th grade season went very well.  All teams played hard every game.  In the semi-finals, the Bulls beat the Bucks and the Hornets beat the Kings, which upset the league standings.  The Hornets and Bulls then played a very intense championship game.  Both teams gave it their all--it was very exciting.  The Hornets came ahead in the 4th quarter to win the championship.

In the championship game the Blazers got out to an early lead, but the Lakers played good team basketball to even the score by half-time. Both teams hustled until the end, but the Lakers pulled away in the 2nd half to win the first place spot. In the consolation game the Bucks showed some hot shooting to take the lead at half-time. The Kings put in a strong effort and began to close the gap in the 2nd half, but did not have enough time to catch up. In the end the Bucks controlled the game and won to take the 3rd place spot.

OYA Boys 6th Grade

Commissioner: Paul Pitsoulakis

There were many well played games throughout the season and the playoff showed some great action as well. With less than 15 seconds left in the 6th grade championship game, the Nuggets sealed the victory and overcame a halftime deficit to win 30-26 over the Lakers. They played keep away the last minute and then hit a big free throw, thwarting the Lakers’ late surge. This was a typical battle for theses two teams who split the regular season series. It was an exciting conclusion to a terrific season. In an action packed consolation game the Kings beat the Pistons 31-15, ending a fine season for both teams and the league.

OYA Boys 5th Grade

Commissioner: Steve Argires

The Bulls protected their first place regular season ranking by defeating the Mavericks in an exciting Championship game.  Trailing at the end of three quarters by five points, they regrouped and won the game in the final minute of play 23-22.  While it was a disappointing loss for the Mavericks they fought hard throughout the game and showed that they were worthy of the second place finish from the regular season. In fact all four of our regular season leaders protected their ranking in the playoffs.  In the Consolation game the Nuggets defeated the Lakers to end a great season for both teams.

OYA Boys 4th Grade

Commissioner: Dan McMillan

The Celtics finished the season 21-1 and were the outright champion of the 4th grade OYA boys basketball 2004-2005 season. The Celtics were led by Zak Niemiera, the league's most well rounded player who has to be considered one of the finest players at his level in the state. Zak was supported by an outstanding group of teammates that displayed true teamwork throughout the season. The Celtics only loss came at the hands of the Sixers who were led by their coach Eileen Copenhaver, the most talented coach in the OYA. Eileen led her team to a second place finish at 19-3 and will be a force to be reckoned with next year.

Letter from the President

I want to thank all of the parents that have come forward to coach teams, and assist in running our programs. We have scheduled over 1000 basketball games, so its easy to see why your assistance is necessary.

And parents, there is another area in which you can help. We need to make sure we respect our facilities that are made available to us.  For basketball, all our activities should be restricted to the gyms only.  All other areas of the schools are off limits. This pertains to players, siblings, and visitors.  I ask your help to monitor this situation while at your son's games.

We say goodbye and thank you to board members Ray Lipke and Greg Galgan, who have given countless hours to this youth organization. Gentlemen, you have left your mark. Thank you for everything, it's been a pleasure to work with you.  (Greg has agreed to stay on as an advisor to the position so the transition will be a smooth one.)

I'd also like to welcome our new board members, Jim Amedeo, John Carney, and Tony Marchese. I look forward to working with these new board members as my term winds down.

And most importantly, Let's Have Fun!  There are more important things in life than the basketball score.  Let the kids be kids...they will make mistakes,  Let the coaches coach...they are volunteering their time for the kids.  And...Let the refs referee... it's not easy...try it!

Thank you!
Tim Brkovic
