PONY Cubs beat the Yankees 13-8 for the World Series Title.
While the Chicago Cubs took a beating against the Yanks in the 1932 and 1938 World Series, the OYA Cubs got revenge for the namesake club last Thursday night.
The Yanks jumped out to and early 1st inning lead 4-0. Yankee pitcher Kevin Groeper then held the Cubs to just two runs in the first two innings. The Yankees added another run in the third for a commanding 5-2 lead. Furthermore, Cubs star player Nick Mata spent the night in the hospital recovering from arm surgery. To some fans, the Cub tradition of bad luck and omens seemed to be in place. However, this Cub team, who learned their winning ways from watching the 2005 World Champion White Sox, would not succumb to bad luck or omens. Led by starting pitcher and slugger Brian Harrison, the Cubs fought back. After tying the fame in the fourth, Cub hitters came alive and racked up four runs in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth. Yankee hitters started giving Cub closer Brian Mulhausen trouble in the seventh when Cub shortstop Kyle McMahon made a spectacular diving “snow cone” catch to help settle things down.
The Yankees, who led both leagues in regular season wins are to be commended for a fine season. Led by the Lalla siblings, Kevin Groeper, Mike Guajardo and others, they fought until the last out. Wouldn’t it be great if we see the two namesake teams playing this October with the same results?
